We’ve talked a lot in recent months about how marketing is being overcome with bland, impersonal messaging. This is super efficient… you can reach a lot of people if you are just blasting everyone with the same AI images your competition is using and posting without considering a strategy.

But does it work?

It might. For a while.

When you’re working to build long-term relationships with clients who will do business with you again and again, there’s a better way. And it has to do with personal connection.

We are humans, and we are designed to connect with other humans. I think of my local Farmers Market, which just started up this season. I can buy asparagus from the grocery store. But it feels better to buy from my local farmer who has carefully curated her garden. I also think of the homestead where I buy my eggs. I could get a dozen for cheaper at the store, but I love the stories behind the carton filled with colorful eggs I get every few weeks.

Both of these businesses do a super job of showing up personally in their marketing. I feel connected to them, even though we don’t talk every day.

Here are three ways you can improve your personal connections and grow your impact:

  1. Share your journey. Short videos to show the “behind the scenes” of what you do can go a long way. You don’t have to show your face, if you’re not comfortable. My best advice is to NOT overthink it. I like to say “Ship it and forget it!” Showing up for your audience authentically is a lot easier when you’re not spending hours planning and editing.

  2. Show up in person. Think about where your target audience hangs out, and show up there. Because we are a business that serves other businesses, we look for ways to show up where other small businesses congregate. This includes my local BNI group and Chamber of Commerce events.

  3. Say “thank you.” Your customers are voting for you with their dollars. Let them know what that means to you. This can be done with a quick email, a handwritten note, or an in-person word of appreciation. These moments can go a long way when it’s time to renew a contract, purchase an item again, or share a referral to a new connection.
